During our Professional Learning Community meeting staff looked at a recently published article by Kaye Lowe called "For the Love of Reading: Supporting Struggling Readers." It explored how to organize the literacy block so that the needs of all readers are accommodated in the classroom. It asked teachers to consider what pedagogical changes they need to make to facilitate literacy success:
The recommended framework for literacy connects reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing and provides a predictable routine for students and teachers. In the coming weeks we will investigate and develop a framework for the different phases of schooling.
Using this framework, teaching staff completed a self-assessment on their current practices to be used as a basis for differentiated professional learning. In the coming terms we will build our capacity to effectively incorporate these practices into our daily teaching of literacy.
- A daily literacy block of at least 90 minutes is planned.
- Students read and write daily.
- A routine for reading and writing is established.
- Students held accountable for their learning and report on their accomplishments.
- Learning is purposeful and meaningful and reinforces learning outcomes.
- Literacy group activities are linked to learning outcomes.
- Students engage because students understand the purpose and see value in what they are being asked to do.
