2. Designated Staff Member for Literacy
Every school needs to identify literacy/numeracy coordinator who both coach teachers and support student learning. Structures, relationships and resources are in place to support them to undertake their roles within the school.
Designating a staff member for literacy leadership is an important strategy for literacy reform. This person, often referred to as the Literacy Teacher, is a key resource person in the school. Literacy teachers are lead learners and team builders. As members of the school leadership team, they are knowledgeable about literacy content and about the management of change. Literacy teachers work alongside classroom teachers, modelling and demonstrating successful literacy practices. As part of their role, they actively help plan and facilitate professional learning at the school.
- Literacy teachers have time scheduled to work with classroom teachers to support focused literacy instruction e.g. during Literacy block
- They are lead learners and team builders
- Literacy teachers are knowledgeable about literacy instruction and assessment, and about the management of change
- Literacy teachers work alongside classroom teachers, modeling successful literacy practice
- They plan and facilitate professional learning
