3. Daily, Sustained, Focused Literacy Instruction
There is an expectation that a Literacy block of at least 100 minutes per day is timetabled into classroom schedules. This Literacy block entails focused time on balanced literacy assessment and instruction; no distractions or interruptions; and alignment of the Literacy teacher's daily timetable with the block.
Balanced literacy is an instructional framework designed to teach all students how to make meaning and communicate effectively. Focused lessons, informed by careful assessment of students' stages of development, occur using the following components:
- read and write aloud
- shared reading and writing
- guided reading and writing
- independent reading and writing
